Georgia Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other weird, strange and unusual attractions in Georgia.

Georgia tourist attractions include a factory tour, roadside oddities like a big red apple

(and that’s the name of it: Big Red Apple)

and a visit to a cyclorama.

(Huh? Whazzat?)

  • Atlanta - Civil War in cyclorama.

Cycloramas were an art form before movies. They are large cylindrical paintings made so if you stand in the middle you are surrounded by a 360-degree view of the scene.

The Atlanta Cyclorama pictures the Battle of Atlanta fought during the Civil War. It was painted in 1885-1886 and has been on display in Atlanta since 1893.

This particular Georgia tourist attraction is the longest running show in the U.S.

In front of the painting is a 3-D diorama. Look for Clark Gable's smiling face on a dead Union soldier.

No, Clark Gable wasn't in the Civil War.

Supposedly when they were filming Gone with the Wind he visited the cyclorama and claimed the only thing that would make it better is if he were in it. So he was added into one of the sculptures of the diorama.

Directions: The Atlanta Cyclorama is at 800 Cherokee Avenue SE. in Grant Park. Take I-20 to Boulevard Avenue, exit 59a. Go south on Boulevard .5 miles to parking entrance on the left. This parking lot fills up fast. For one that usually has spaces available but is a bit longer walk, continue to Atlanta Ave and turn right. Turn right on Cherokee and turn right at the cannons. • Cleveland - Babies do come from the cabbage patch.

At least in Georgia they do.

Cleveland Georgia is the birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Dolls.
Watch as a Cabbage Patch Kid is born before your very eyes.

When you hear the words, “Doctor, report to delivery, we have a Mother Cabbage in labor”, hurry to the Magic Crystal Tree to see the miracle of birth.

Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland, Georgia is the birthplace of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. They’re open every day, except some holidays. They are located 75 miles northeast of Atlanta, off U.S. 129 in Cleveland at 19 Underwood St. Phone: (706) 865-2171

There's a covered bridge and a folk art gallery in Cleveland, too!

  • Cornelia - Roadside oddities take the form of a huge red apple in Cornelia Georgia.

The Big Red Apple is just that: A big red apple. It sits on a pedestal by the train depot, making it even taller. It was built in 1925 and weighs 5,200 pounds.

That's a pretty hefty Georgia tourist attraction! Don't want to drop that on your toe!

  • Dawsonville - Largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia.

  • Lookout Mountain - Natural and man made kitsch unite.

Rock City Gardens had a great advertising campaign, almost as good as Wall Drug in South Dakota.

    Well…almost almost.

Their “See Rock City” signs were painted on barns as far north as Michigan and as far west as Texas. Their major claim to fame is you can see seven states from on top of Lookout Mountain in Georgia.

Rock City Gardens has quite a variety of both man made and natural oddities like a hanging bridge, a 1,000-Ton Balanced Rock, a Mother Goose village, the Needle’s Eye, Fairyland Caverns and lots more including the Seven States Flag Court where you can see those seven states - Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Did you count them to make sure there are seven?

Rock City Gardens is at 1400 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, GA . Phone: (706) 820-2531 or (800) 854-0675

  • Savannah - Wade out to a lighthouse.

Or keep going south on Hwy 80 past Lazaretto Creek, to get to the river for a closer view. Check for a boat tour in the Lazaretto Creek Marina Tybee Island if you don’t want to get your feet wet.
