Iowa Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other weird, strange and unusual attractions in Iowa.

Have you ever ridden an incline railway? Iowa tourist attractions include one-The steepest, shortest scenic railway in the world!

That's one cool ride!!!!

And when was the last time you had an old fashioned soda mixed by a soda jerk in a real live old time soda shop?

Nummmmmmmmy stuff!!!

Or how about hitting a few balls at the Field of Dreams movie site? Have you ever done that?

It's different.

You can’t do that just anywhere! Only in Iowa!

  • Bentonsport - Unusual lodgings in Iowa include a caboose and a haunted hotel.

  • Britt - Be a hobo for a weekend.

Grab a bowl of Mulligan Stew and swap stories with the free spirits of a footloose lifestyle at the Hobo Convention.

The National Hobo Convention is held the second weekend in August in the small town of Britt, IA.

If you can't make it to Iowa for the convention, here's a great book on how to be a hobo anytime: Hopping Freight Trains in America. So grab a copy of the book, pack up your belongings in a handkerchief and tie it to a stick, fling it over your shoulder and start walking the rails. (And here's the required disclaimer, just so you know, hopping freight trains is illegal.)

  • Burlington - Sometimes roadside oddities are the road!

The crookedest street in the world is an Iowa tourist attraction.

It was built in 1894 as a more direct route to the downtown business district and the neighborhood shopping area on North Sixth Street.

Still paved with the original brick, Snake alley was patterned after the vineyard paths in France and Germany.

Snake Alley is at the 600 block of Washington Street, downtown Burlington, Iowa.

  • Dubuque - For a different cool ride, try the World’s Shortest, Steepest scenic railway.
