Kentucky Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other weird, strange and unusual attractions in Kentucky.

Kentucky tourist attractions include weird food!

And cool roadside oddities…

  • Bardstown - What is Burgoo?

    (Accent on the bur!)

Burgoo is a stew made from a bunch of different ingredients. A bunch of different meats, a bunch of different veggies, a bunch of different spices…

Traditionally, it’s cooked outdoors over an open flame in huge iron kettles. Sometimes it takes as long as 30 hours to cook!

You could get pretty hungry waiting for that meal!

Luckily there are places around Kentucky that have it on their menu so you don’t have to wait around for someone to cook it up for you.

The Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown, KY has been there since the late 1700s. One of those places is Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown, KY.

It’s been a Kentucky tourist attraction since the late 1700s.

Supposedly Abraham Lincoln stopped there with his family as a youngster. And Daniel Boone stayed there. And Jesse James. And some exiled French king and his entourage.

It’s got a pretty varied past. And a long past. Well, for the U.S. that is.

So since it’s that old, is it haunted?

    Hmmmm.

Well, it’s a bed and breakfast, too, so why not stay a night and find out for yourself?

The Old Talbott Tavern is at 107 W. Stephen Foster Avenue, Bardstown, Kentucky Phone: (502) 348-3494 or Toll Free: 800 4TAVERN (482-8376)

  • Hazard - Mother Goose in Hazard.

The Mother Goose building in Hazard was made by looking at a real goose skeleton. Hazard, Kentucky.

A large oval stone building is a nest for a roof shaped like a goose.

The windows are shaped like eggs.

Hmm….Looks like they use a lot of green shingles for the roof of this Kentucky tourist attraction!

The Mother Goose building is at 2880 Main St/Rt 476 in Hazard, Kentucky.

  • Lexington - Mimetic architecture in Lexington!

Bondurant's Pharmacy is a great example of new mimetic architecture. Lexington, Kentucky. Larger than life mortar and pestle makes a great Kentucky tourist attraction.

And this huge symbol of pharmacies houses a … pharmacy!

    Yeah!

    True mimetic architecture!

Address: Bondurant’s Pharmacy is at 1465 Village Dr just off US 60, Lexington, KY.

  • Louisville - Kitschy diner with weird food!

‘Member, weird food to one person may not be weird food to another.

So if you don’t think a BLT made with fried green tomatoes can be classified as weird food, you will at least agree that the décor in Lynn’s Paradise Café is weird.

    Way weird.

That’s half the fun of going to this Kentucky tourist attraction, to look around at all the tacky lamps on the tables and other kitschy stuff filling the restaurant.

Lynn's Paradise Cafe is a kitschy diner in Louisville, Kentucky that just can't be missed!

To find Lynn’s Paradise Café, look for the big red coffeepot and two big brightly painted coffee cups outside the café.

Lynn’s Paradise Café is at 984 Barret Ave, Louisville, KY

P.S. More weird food at Lynn’s- try the BLT fries. They’re homemade French fries covered with Jack cheese, spinach, bacon, tomatoes and a horseradish sour cream.

Louisville - Lotsa liquor in this roadside oddity.

An old water tower painted to look like an Old Forester liquor bottle, Louisville, Kentucky.

    Not really!

It’s an old water tower painted to be the World’s Largest Bottle of Bourbon.

Old Forester is America’s first bottle bourbon, produced since 1870.

    In Lousville.

    Continuously.

    Yeah. Continuously.

    Since 1870.

And if you know history, you know prohibition happened somewhere between 1870 and now.

And yes, it was produced during prohibition. You see, it was the first bourbon to meet medicinal standards!

See the huge liquor bottle on Dixie Hwy just south of Rt. 150 (Broadway), Louisville, Kentucky.
