The lamp at this California lighthouse was first lit in 1872. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses in America. It is 115 feet tall.
The lighthouse accommodations are four 3-bedroom houses next to the lighthouse that the Coast Guard built in the early 1960s. They have been turned into a hostel with room for up to 50 people of all ages. A hostel means you provide your own linens and clean up after yourself. In return you have a cheaper place to stay the night. Each house has 3 male or female bunkrooms. You share bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms. For even more adventure, time your overnight stay for January – April when the gray whales are migrating.

After a long history of shipwrecks, the government finally installed a fog signal in 1875.But that didn’t stop the ships from running aground. So in 1900 a kerosene lantern was installed on a post near the fog whistle. In 1902, the original fog signal was replaced by a one and a half story, wood-framed structure, typical of other fog-signal buildings of the period. That’s where you get to stay – in the fog signal building. Or you can stay in the turn of the century Coast Guard buildings. They’ve been converted to a youth hostel.
Nope, can’t stay in the original 1875 keeper’s house. That’s for the hostel staff. But hey, the next best thing is the fog signal building for that authentic feel for lighthouse accommodations in California.

The lighthouse tower now on the grounds was built in 1928. It’s kinda short, only 30 feet high compared to the 115 foot high Pigeon Point Lighthouse but hey, it’s still a lighthouse!
