New Jersey Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other weird, strange and unusual attractions in New Jersey.

There’s plenty of kitschy New Jersey tourist attractions. Atlantic City was based on kitsch. Now it’s a more upscale kitsch, but kitsch by any other name is still a quirky, tacky and weird tourist attraction.

There’s a huge elephant just south of Atlantic City, there’s Storybook Land in Cardiff and there’s the Martian landing site.

All in New Jersey.

So come one, come all. Step right up and experience first-hand the wonderful weird tourist attractions New Jersey has to offer…

  • Cardiff - Chugging away since 1955!

Storybook Land in Cardiff, Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
So many of these old style amusement parks have bit the dust.

The ones that are left are truly roadside oddities!

Luckily for us, Storybook Land has kept up with the times without losing its old style atmosphere.

Populated with characters from classic stories and nursery rhymes, the park now has rides interspersed between the characters.

The rides are geared toward the younger set (none of those thrill rides here!) so it’s a great place to get a sense of the old amusement parks that were once so popular.

For your ticket back in time, Storybook Land is at 6415 Black Horse Pike (Routes 40 / 322), Cardiff, New Jersey. Phone: (609) 641-7847

  • Grover’s Mill - The Martians landed in New Jersey!

And residents were so terrified they even shot a windmill all to heck, thinking it was a Martian!

Well, hey, this was back in the 1930s, so how were they supposed to know Martians are really little green men with pointy heads and big huge eyes?

Yep, we’re talking about the famous Orson Welles' radio broadcast of War of the Worlds. Grover’s Mill is where the Martians landed. And, yep, in true American roadside oddities tradition, there’s even a monument to commemorate the landing.

The Martian Landing Site Monument is on the south side of Cranbury Road in Van Nest Park, Grover’s Mill, New Jersey.

  • Margate - An 1880s New Jersey tourist attraction.

Lucy, the Margate Elephant, began life as an elephant.

    Well, duh you say…

She was more than just an elephant though.

    She was an advertising gimmick.

A huge roadside oddity in Margate, New Jersey is Lucy, the elephant. She was built in the 1880s. Prospective real estate buyers could climb the stairs inside her and go out on a platform to see the land for sale.

    That was in the 1880s.

Now Lucy is one of those strange and unusual New Jersey tourist attractions. You can still climb the stairs inside her. And you can still see the view from the platform. It's changed dramatically, of course!

Directions: Lucy is at 9200 Atlantic Avenue in Margate, NJ, just south of Atlantic City.

  • Vineland - New Jersey’s lone drive-in theater.

Once, way back when, drive-in theaters were popular. Then parking lots for malls became more popular.

    Good-by drive-ins.

There is one lone remaining drive-in theater in New Jersey.

    Yeah!

    At least there’s one!

Location: The Delsea Drive-In is at 2203 South Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ
