North Dakota Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other strange, unusual and weird tourist attractions in North Dakota.

A lot of weird North Dakota tourist attractions are built big.

In Jamestown the world's largest concrete buffalo resides at Frontier Village, another North Dakota tourist attraction.

In New Salem there is an udderly huge cow. (Ha. Ha Ha.)

(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

Sandy, the world's largest sandhill crane, is 40 1/2 feet tall.

Garrison ND is home to Wally the Walleye, the world's largest fiberglass Walleye.

In Bottineau there's a huge turtle statue, another one in Dunseith and still another giant turtle at Turtle Lake.

A trio of turtle North Dakota tourist attractions!

Bottineau - Snowmobiling turtle.

Tommy the Turtle is one of the giant turtle roadside oddities in North Dakota.

Tommy the giant turtle rides a snowmobile in Bottineau's City Park.

I bet it's the largest turtle-on-a-snowmobile statue in the world.

You think maybe?

They don't seem to be a very common combination, even in roadside oddities.

Dunseith - A turtle made of wheels.

Wee'l Turtle awes visitors at the junction of highways 3,5 and 281 in Dunseith North Dakota. This giant roadside attraction is made from over 2,000 discarded tire rims.

Wally the Walley is the world's largest Walleye, Garrison, North Dakota.
Garrison - Catch a Walleye.

Or if fishing isn't your thing, you at least have to take in the world's largest Walleye in the Walleye Capital of the World.

  • Between Gladstone and Regent the Enchanted Highway beckons...

The giant Tin Family, one of six huge metal scultpures along the Enchanted Highway in North Dakota.
Another "World's largest" for North Dakota. This roadside oddity is the world's largest tin family, one of six huge metal sculptures along the highway between Gladstone and Regent.

You can even own these North Dakota tourist attractions yourself.

    Well, sort of anyway.....

There's a gift shop in Regent that has miniatures of the sculptures along the Enchanted Highway.

Jamestown - Take a trek down Louis L'Amour Street.

    Yee-HAWWWWWW!!!

The famous Western writer lived in Jamestown for the first 15 years of his life. Frontier Village, a recreated Old West prairie town, is on Louis L'Amour St. in Jamestown, North Dakota.

Maybe it's kind of a hokey tourist trap but hey! That's what this site is all about. Right? Weird and unusual, hokey and fun, tourist attractions and roadside oddities.

So go on, gallop down Louis L'Amour Street to the World's Largest Buffalo and take a gander at the real buffalo dotting the hillside beside it. See if you can spot White Cloud!!

The world's largest buffalo is in Frontier Village in Jamestown North Dakota.

    New Salem - MOOOOOOOO!!!!

Salem Sue is the world's largest concrete Holstein. This massive North Dakota tourist attraction stands on a hill overlooking town.

    Steele - Birds galore.

If you're a birdwatcher, Steele is the place to go. There are all sorts of Wildlife Refuges and birding drives to go on. It is a favorite spot for birdwatchers from all over the world.

Sandy the world's largest sandhill crane, stands in Steele , North Dakota. But what if you're not into birds?

What if you're into roadside oddities?

Well, this is a bird you can't miss --the world's largest sandhill crane.

Sandy, the largest sandhill crane in the world, is off the I-94 at Exit 200 and Highway 3 North in Steele ND.

Turtle Lake - Rusty is a two ton roadside oddity on the south side of town. Rusty is...well...rusty. Check out this virtual tour of Rusty, Turtle Lake's giant turtle.

Wahpeton - A cool ride and a circus monument. Oh, and let's not forget--the World's Largest Catfish.

The Ringling Borther's Circus Monument to two workers killed when lightning struck the pole of the tent they were raising. Wahpeton, North Dakota.

  • Back in the late 1890s, the Ringling Brother's Circus was getting ready for a show in Wahpeton North Dakota.

A storm moved in and when they went to raise the tent, lightning struck the pole.

    Two workers were killed immediately.

    A monument marks their graves.

It's an exact replica of the pole, complete with the rope and chain the men were using to raise the tent.

Ringling Brother's Circus Monument is in Riverside Cemetery just south of Wahpeton on Old U.S. Highway 81.

  • Do you like cool rides?

This isn't a thrill-ride. It's more like a ride back in time, to a slower pace when carnivals came to town...

The Prairie Rose Carousel is an old restored 1926 Spillman carousel.

It's next to the Chahinkapa Zoo, which is also a neat North Dakota tourist attraction.

Directions to get your antique carousel ride on the Prairie Rose Carousel: from State Hwy 13-E go north on 1st St. N. Follow the signs to Zoo. The Prairie Rose Carousel is in the center of the park. Phone: (701) 642-8709

  • Wahpper, the Catfish. Named for the town, this whopper of a catfish is the world's largest catfish.

He's beached (is that the correct fish-jargon for a fresh water fish on land????) in the Kidder Recreation Area along the Red River. The Red River is the border between North Dakota and Minnesota.
