The Octagon House
Fon du Lac, Wisconsin
Not only is the Octagon House a cool strange house but it’s haunted too!
Lots of passageways, a secret room, an underground tunnel….Hey, that adds up to a pretty cool house, I’d say. Throw in a few ghosts and we’re off and running to a wonderful Wisconsin adventure…
Built in 1856, the Octagon House is well, octagon shaped.
Imagine that!
It’s got 12 rooms, 9 passageways, and a hand-dug tunnel that leads from the house to the carriage house.
Hmmmmm. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?????
Underground Railroad!
Yep,
Once an old Indian fort, this historical Wisconsin house was used as a station in the underground railroad, helping runaway slaves get to Canada. A couple of those slaves liked it so well they never left.
One is a boy of 8 named Roy and the other is Jeb, a 23 year old male. Especially pay attention to your senses in the underground tunnel under the stairs and in the second floor hideaway, though they could be most anywhere.
Regular ghostly happenings happen here, too, like footsteps…and no one is there. Things moved around. Doors opening and shutting.
And even, bizarrely, a spinning wheel taken apart.
Go figure.
One bored ghost, I guess. Or maybe two. I can just hear them, Hey, Jeb, let’s take the spinning wheel apart. Heh heh heh. That’ll get ‘em!
For a special ghostly treat, check their schedule and go for a dinner and candlelight tour.
Yeah!
Explore the secret passageways and underground tunnel by candlelight! You can even dress up all Victoriany (they have costumes for rent there) for the event.
When it’s dark you have a good chance of seeing unexplained lights and hearing weird noises.
The haunted Octagon House is at 276 Linden Street, Fon du Lac, WI. For more info phone: (920) 922-1608
