Time to take a cool ride on a river ferry!

Wheatland Ferry across the Willamette River in Oregon.

River ferries have been used for centuries to get people and stuff from one side of the river to the other. There's not many left, with so many bridges now.

Which is sad because riding a river ferry is cool and different.

But hey! Oregon has three of these ferries. Not one, not two but three!!!

A triplet of Oregon tourist attractions!!!

They cross the Willamette River and they all close when the river gets too high. One-the Buena Vista Ferry, is closed all winter.

A fun Oregon tourist attraction is riding the Canby Ferry across the Willamette River.

Canby Ferry - The Canby Ferry is just north of Canby.

It is the only way to cross the Willamette River between the bridge at Oregon City and the Interstate 5 bridge at Wilsonville, OR. Phone: (503) 650-3030

Wheatland Ferry - North of Keizer, Oregon the small Wheatland Ferry runs between Marion and Yamhill counties. It carries passengers and vehicles across the Willamette River at Wheatland Rd.

This Oregon tourist attraction, the Buean Vista Ferry, is only open from April through October.

Buena Vista Ferry - This ferry is only open April-October. It can carry four cars at a time. It is in Buena Vista, near Independence, Oregon. Phone: 503-588-7979 for a recorded message.

  • Madras - This Oregon tourist attraction is a rockhounding adventure!

Go rockhounding for thundereggs at Richardson's Rock Ranch. They supply you with a map, instructions and a bucket. Then for this Oregon tourist attraction, they send you out on a 7-mile drive to the digging grounds over a bumpy dirt road.

Directions: Richardson's Rock Ranch is on Highway 97 at Milepost 81, 11 miles north of Madras. Look for their signs and follow them about 3 miles to the shop. Phone: (541) 475-2680

Warning!! Cutoff time to go digging is 3:00 P.M. so make sure you get there before then!

  • Pendleton - Here's an unusual tour you can't take just anywhere----

Sign up for a tour of Pendleton's shady past with Pendleton Underground Tours. Gambling and prostitution businesses operated underground in the old tunnels built by the Chinese.

The 90-minute tour takes you through card rooms, a Chinese laundry and a bordello among other underground places of business.

This used to be a pretty controversial tour due to its content. It has grown in popularity despite that, or probably because of that.

For something even more different, one day a year actors populate the tunnels for the tours. They bring the underground to life with their reenactment of what the tunnels were like over a hundred years ago.

Directions: The Pendleton Underground Tours base is at 37 SW Emigrant between Main South Street and SW 1st Street, Pendleton, OR
    Phone: 1-800-226-6398

  • Redmond - Visit a reindeer all year long, not just at Christmas.

Operation Santa Claus/Reindeer Ranch is open 365 days a year. They have the largest herd of domesticated reindeer in the U.S.

It's not just an Oregon tourist attraction either.

Around Christmas time, the reindeer travel all around the country so lots of people can see them.

Location: Operation Santa Claus is 2 miles west of Redmond, Oregon.

  • Takilma - Got a hankering to stay in a treehouse? Try Out'n'About Treehouses for a bunch of different treehouses and a cool ride, too - on a zip line!
