Unusual lodgings at The Cliff House

Known as the most romantic hotel in Colorado, The Cliff House at Pikes Peak can also be considered pretty unusual lodgings.

It began as a stagecoach stop in the 1850s. When gold was discovered in the Pikes Peak area, it became a 20-room boarding house known simply as “The Inn”.

When mining activity dwindled to about nothing, the town of Manitou Springs struggled to survive. For eons, the sparkling water and mineral springs in the area were known for their healing powers. Someone got the bright idea to turn The Inn into a sophisticated resort hotel capitalizing on the healing waters. It was renamed The Cliff House.

Eureka! They were sitting on a gold mine that had nothing to do with gold.

Many famous people stopped by and a reminder of some of those people are in the names of the suites of today. Thomas Edison, PT Barnum, and Buffalo Bill are just a few.

When it was no longer fashionable to “take the waters”, The Cliff House was later turned into an apartment building. After a fire in 1982, the building stood vacant and lonely for 16 years.

Poor sad building.

Folks in the town of Manitou Springs were very concerned about the horrible state of their once beautiful historic hotel. The owner vowed to restore it to it to its original old Victorian elegance. With modern upgrades like heated toilet seats. Of course.

Most of the rooms have gorgeous mountain views. Suites have gas fireplaces and either a 2-person spa tub (the Thomas Edison Suite has a skylight in the sloped ceiling above the tub—Cool!!!) or steam shower. Some have both.

The really nifty neato room to stay in is the Buffalo Bill Celebrity Suite (pictured above). It’s in a turret and has a teepee painted on the conical ceiling.

Wanna know what other people are saying about The Cliff House and what it costs to stay there?

While you’re in Manitou Springs, don't miss the chance to ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. That is one cool adventure. Just make sure you don't get stuck up at the top of the mountain!!!
