Utah Tourist Attractions

Guide to roadside oddities and other weird, strange and unusual attractions in Utah.

Winter Utah tourist attractions don't always have to be just ski trips! There's a lot of other winter attractions, too.

Amazing!

How about a sleigh ride through an elk herd?

Or a scenic train ride on an old steam train known as the Heber Creeper?

Plus there are some pretty nifty summer adventures in Utah at ski resorts. Like the 50-mile an hour ride on a zipline.

Or let's forget about skiing and ski resorts and take a trip back in time. WAY back in time. Like when dinosaurs roamed the earth and left behind their tracks and bones and some roadside oddities.

No, no, I'm not talking about those kinds of roadside oddies!

I'm talking about dinosaurs about town. Around Vernal, to be exact.

  • Alpine - Tour a candy cane factory.

You don't have to go all the way to the North Pole to watch candy canes being made! Candy canes are a Utah tourist attraction, too!

Kencrafts is a candy factory in Alpine UT. To get to the observation decks to watch the candies made, you go through Peppermint Place, their retail store. Check for seconds in the store...

    Peppermint Place is at 119 E. 200 N. Alpine UT. Phone: 1-800-377-4368.

  • Hanksville - This is one of those roadside oddities must-get-gas-or-at least-use-their-restroom stop.

Hollow Mountain is a convenience store and gas station in a hollowed out rock. Gotta check out the restrooms, especially the hallway leading back to them.

If you're traveling through the area, don't miss this Utah tourist attraction at the intersection of Utah highways 95 and 24. Phone: (435) 542-3298

  • Heber City - Allllllll Aboooooooard the Heber Creeper for a scenic train ride to Provo Canyon.

The Heber Valley Historic Railroad, or the Heber Creeper, is a scenic train ride to Provo Canyon in Utah.

Winter is the time to go for that special different kind of a train ride.

A steam train is always an awesome sight but the cold winter accentuates the steam even more.

On this wonderful historic Utah tourist attraction you can belly-up to an old-fashioned potbellied stove to chase away the chill and enjoy the 3-hour ride.

(It's not called Creeper cuz it's fast!)

The Heber Valley Historic Railroad, better known as the Heber Creeper, is located at South 600 Wes 450 South 600 West in Heber City, UT Phone: (435) 654-5601

    Hyrum
    - Cool ride through an elk herd.

How many times have you ridden through an elk herd?

    Not many people have.

    So here's your chance...

Taking a sleigh ride through the elk herd at the Hardware Ranch in Utah.

The Hardware Ranch Game Management Area is a wildlife refuge. It's about 2 hours north of Salt Lake City, near Hyrum, UT. They have sleigh rides into the elk herds.

And some nights they have moonlight sleigh rides to see the elk.

That's the way to go for something even more different!

Directions. To get to the Hardware Ranch Game Management Area from Hyrum, take Blacksmith Fork Canyon (Highway 101) east to the ranch.

Tip: Check out the road conditions first before venturing on this Utah adventure. Winter snowstorms can make the road slipppppperrrrry. It's usually plowed and sanded by noon after each snowstorm, but you probably don't want to miss your sleigh ride cuz you fell off the road. Phone: (435) 753-6206 or (435) 753-6168

  • Park City - Park City, Utah tourist attractions aren't all just about skiing!

In the summer ride the lift up the mountain at Park City Resort, then shoot back down like bobsledder on the Alpine Slide.

    Whoooooeeeee!!!

Or how about the World's Steepest Zipline at the Utah Olympic Park?

    YeeeeeeHAW!!!

Zip down the Xtreme Zip at 50 miles an hour strapped into a harness hanging from a cable.

  • Sundance - Dine with a tree.

The Tree Room at the Sundance Resort has a tree growing through the dining room.

And hopefully, trees don't make you sneeze!

(Yeah, yeah. I know. Very Dr. Seussy.)

Location: Tree Room is at the Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah. Phone: 801-223-4200

  • Vernal Area - Dinosaurland!!!

Gotta get your dinosaur-hunting license before you go looking for a "terrible lizard"!!!

There's a bunch of cool Utah tourist attractions all in one place at Dinosaurland. There's the largest Jurassic Dinosaur Quarry in the world. 340 tons + of dinosaur bones have been excavated from there.

That's a lot of dinosaur bones!

There's rock paintings and scenic byways and trails.

    And there's dinosaur tracks.

A great starting place for a Dinosaurland adventure is Vernal.

This huge pink roadside oddity welcomes you to Vernal, Utah. Roadside oddities are just naturally dinosaur-oriented in Vernal. A huge pink cartoony dinosaur welcomes people to town.

And a many-toothed T-Rex looms on the other side of town.

A large T-Rex looms over the town of Vernal, Utah.

A good introduction to real live (or should that be real dead?) dinosaurs is the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal. As you enter--look UP. Be sure and check out the Dinosaur Garden so you can identify the different species when you go out dinosaur hunting at this Utah tourist attraction called Dinosaurland.

Utah Field House of Natural History is at 496 East Main Street in Vernal. Phone (435) 789-3799
