Guide to roadside oddities and other strange, unusual & weird tourist attractions in Wyoming.
Jackalopes are favorite Wyoming tourist attractions.
They are the state's official mythical creature.
The world's largest jackalope resides in Douglas in Jackalope Square. A fitting place for this Wyoming tourist attraction as Douglas is the Jackalope Capitol of the World.
For a weird natural attraction, the intermittent spring in Star Valley is a must see.
Yellowstone National Park has lots of weird tourist attractions. Many natural ones and some manmade ones. Like the Old Faithful Inn. That's some unusual lodgings!
Wyoming is big on elkhorn arches. There's four in Jackson in the Town Square. However, Afton can boast theirs is the world's largest elkhorn arch.
The arch is across Highway 89 between 4th and 5th Ave, Afton, Wyoming.
Afton - A weird natural Wyoming tourist attraction.
Intermittent Spring is a cold water geyser, one of only three known in the world. It is the world's largest.
Uh, and...?
Well, stand around and watch the water flow, then just shut off! Okay, at times it never really stops completely, just goes down to a trickle. But usually in the late summer and fall, when the groundwater tables are low...it stops. Now how weird is that?
Pretty darn weird, I'd say!
It's also called Periodic Spring. It stops and starts about every 15 minutes.

Directions: In Afton, Wyoming, head east on Second Ave. Take Second (Swift Creek) 5 miles to the end. It's about a 20 minute hike from the end of the road. The trail, along Swift Creek, is well maintained. Tip: The trail is a little tricky at the top so wear good hiking shoes.
Casper - Sleep with a ghost cat at this haunted hotel!
Now what trip to Wyoming would be complete without taking in at least one rodeo? I mean, Wyoming is the Cowboy State.
Rodeos are a must!

Not in Wyoming on a weekend you say?
No problem.
The town of Cody, "Rodeo Capital of the World", has it covered. During the summer, from June 1 through August 31, there's a rodeo every night.
That's right!
A rodeo every night!
Yeeeeeee HAWWWWW!!!!
The Cody Nite Rodeo is the only seven-nights-a-week rodeo in the country. It's a great place to gain rodeo experience and many big-name rodeo people got their start here. You might even recognize some of the names, since professionals come here to compete, too.
During the Fourth of July, it's major rodeo time in Wyoming. The Cody Stampede Rodeo is world famous. It's been called the "best large outdoor rodeo" in the nation! On a list of Wyoming tourist attractions, this is a must!
The Cody Nite Rodeo is held at the rodeo grounds on the banks of the Shoshone River west of Cody.
Directions: Drive west through Cody towards Yellowstone National Park. The rodeo grounds are past the Super Wal-Mart. Phone: 800-207-0744
A jackalope in a Dubois gas station/store is all saddled and ready to ride. Not exactly a roadside oddity as it's inside, but the signs are outside.
No, not a pile of droppings kind of sign - those are inside, too - I mean sign signs. Advertising this Wyoming tourist attraction. Watch for them on Highway 278.
There's another jackalope along the highway in Dubois, too.
The world’s largest jade bar is at the Dip Bar in Medicine Bow, Wyoming.
It's a forty foot bar and was cut from a 4 1/2 ton jade boulder.
That’s four and a half tons of jade somebody found!
That's a lot of jade!
Oh, and in case you're wondering about the name? Dip Bar????
It's named after the Diplodocus Dinosaur.
Bones of the Diplodocus Dinosaur were found nearby. There's lots of dinosaur bones around this part of Wyoming. The Dinosaur Graveyard is just east of Medicine Bow.
Which brings us to the next Wyoming tourist attraction.
The Fossil Cabin is 8 miles east of Medicine Bow, Wyoming on U.S. Hwy 30/287 (Lincoln Highway). Phone: (307) 379-2323

Dip Bar is at 202 Lincoln Hwy, Medicine Bow, WY. Phone: (307) 379-2312

Funky, kitschy Old Faithful Inn is a huge log hotel. There's a massive gabled roof with a widow's walk and 3 stories of dormer windows.
Inside, everything's rustic with the log framing all exposed. There's a humongous stone fireplace in the lobby. The lobby is seven-stories tall with two levels of balconies, their railings made of gnarled logs.
This first, central part was built in 1903. It's called Old House, and that's the place to stay.
They might not advertise it, but the ghost of a headless woman walks those balconies.
Photos courtesy Wilson’s Yellowstone National Park roadtrip.
A long time ago, a newlywed couple stayed the night at the Old Faithful Inn. The next morning only the bride remained, without her head.
She now roams the balconies.
In search of her head?
How would she see if she found it?
In search of her murdering husband?
Or just to haunt the place, give it a touch more atmosphere?
Like this Wyoming tourist attraction doesn't have a lot of atmosphere already.
There's another ghost sighting also. Perhaps it is the architect who designed the Old Faithful Inn. In the evenings, check the hallways for a short, ghostly-looking man. Walking, walking, walking endlessly but purposefully.
There’s a picture of the architect on this
brochure
of the Old Faithful Inn. Study it so you can recognize him!
And..(duh!) the woman is easily recognizable cuz she’s missing her head!
A good time to see her is to take a very early morning stroll on the balconies.
So, if a Yellowstone Park vacation is in your future, the Old Faithful Inn is THE place to stay. Old-fashioned rustic kitsch and a couple of ghosts? How can you beat that????
Even if you don't stay the night at Old Faithful Inn, it's a Yellowstone must-see. It might be harder to see the ghosts during the day but there's a great view of Old Faithful erupting from the upper porch.
